It is really heartbreaking how cultural diversity as well as biodiversity is declining so quickly. After watching the TED Talk, by Wade Davis, it really puts into perspective the reality of the issue. Biodiversity is the various plants and animals that make up our ecosystems while cultural diversity is the variety of cultural differences that exist in the world. As ecosystems diminish, cultures are forced to change. Unstable ecosystems not only affect animals, but people too. Many people in other countries around the world rely on their environment and natural resources just as much as the animals do. Without cultural diversity, the world will conform to one way living and nothing in the world will be unique.
The TED talk touched on the subject of losing cultural diversity in the world. Even though humans should have the ability to adapt to any environment, I would not assume that with the loss of diversity this world would not become boring and tasteless. When the English came to America they needed the help of the Indians in order to survive. Many of the crops that grew in the climate in Europe couldn’t sustain life in American soil. Many cultures in the past have died off, many we may have never heard about, and this is the process of evolution. Davis believes that these cultures aren’t destined to fade away, but instead these dynamic people are being driven out of existence by a force that is beyond their capacities to adapt to. Another key point he talked about was the declination of languages across the world. Approximately 40 years ago there were over 6,000 languages. Forty years later only half of those exist. Government protection and aid may not be the only answer to the problem but it is a valuable part. Looking at the Australia article as well as the chart we completed, Australia’s government and community have gone to great lengths to help protect the biodiversity and the culture.
I believe trying to preserve the cultural diversity and biodiversity around you can completely change the country itself. Government involvement is probably the number one step and key resource. The governments need to include every culture as well as properly fund each area of need equally. This change would be very beneficial for the well being of the country. Australia’s government is a great resource to use when beginning to preserve the many aspects of life.
